I had a conversation once, and of course music came up, and then in the process of talking about music, classical music was brought up, and then instruments, and someone said ” I really love cello, it’s so smooth and sultry”, to which I replied (probably drunkenly) “No. Cello is sex. Pure, straight up sex.”
It really is.
“Zoë Keating is a one-woman orchestra. She uses a cello and a foot-controlled laptop to record layer upon layer of cello, creating intricate, haunting and compelling music. Zoë is known for both her use of technology - which she uses to sample her cello onstage - and for her DIY ethic which has resulted in the sale of over 45,000 copies of her self-released albums and a devoted social media following.” She has played with bands and artists such as Pomplamoose, Amanda Palmer, Imogen Heap, John Vanderslice, and Tears for Fears. She is also, a regular on the Billboard classical charts,…..or in other words, she is fucking amazing. Enough said.
This was taken from the B- side of the 7” split released on Record Store Day, and supposedly will NOT be on the new album, Bloom (due out 5/15). Knowing they are leaving songs as quality as this off the new album, makes me all the more excited to hear it. Also, I really like how they seem to be sticking to a winning formula instead of overly experimenting.
Hey, did you know the new Fanfarlo album was out? I kinda forgot this was coming out and then got it yesterday, and have given it at least 4 or 5 plays since then.
The track, A Flood, is by far my favorite, but I can tell this whole album, Rooms Filled With Light, will be getting a lot of play over the summer. Filled with lush, loud instrumentation, and vocals slightly reminiscent of Beirut’s Zach Condon, Fanfarlo openly soars back with a truly beautiful album.
This is one of said videos that I love,…the animation reminds me of that movie Coraline, have you seen that? It’s crazy and a little creepy for a cartoon, but in a good way.
….and of course there is the Shins, and that new album, and this song, and yeah. Awesomeness.
I don’t know if you’ve heard them or not, but you really should give them a listen if you haven’t, and if you do(give them a listen) and you don’t like them, well,…..I hate you.
Ha!
Ha.
Kidding.
But I do reallylike them, and this new song is pretty sweet imo.
To be honest, when I heard this the other day, I didn’t like it, but I absolutely love pretty much all of the Gorillaz music videos, and after a few more listens this is kinda nice, and it dooooes feature Andre 3000(and James Murphy).
You might have have seen a bit of this on Soup Bowl Sunday, maybe not, either way…. watch the whole thing. This is pretty amazing, and if you listen to it without watching it, it’s even crazier. You’d never guess this is how all these sounds were being made.
“The new music video from OK Go, made in partnership with Chevrolet. OK Go set up over 1000 instruments over two miles of desert outside Los Angeles. A Chevy Sonic was outfitted with retractable pneumatic arms designed to play the instruments, and the band recorded this version of Needing/Getting, singing as they played the instrument array with the car. The video took 4 months of preparation and 4 days of shooting and recording. There are no ringers or stand-ins; Damian took stunt driving lessons. Each piano had the lowest octaves tuned to the same note so that they’d play the right note no matter where they were struck. For more information and behind-the-scenes footage, see http://www.LetsDoThis.com and http://www.okgo.net. Many thanks to Chevy for believing in and supporting such an insane and ambitious project, and to Gretsch for providing the guitars and amps.”
Deathcab for Cutie - Underneath The Sycamore(Official Video)
Cool video. Seems like it’s been done before(?), but I still liked it.
Mp3: Deathcab for Cutie - Earth Angel
Does that guys look a little like Ben Gibbard? Is it supposed to?
The Barr Brothers - Beggar In The Morning(Live On Letterman)
I actually prefer the official video for this song, but I’m posting the live one above so that you can see some of the crazy use of instruments,….and feck, do I love harmonica. :)
Oh, and they have a harp in the band. How cool is that?
